In accordance with current legislation (Art. 108 of Legislative Decree 42/2004), the reproduction of works held by the Library for personal study or research, and in any case for non-profit purposes, is permitted free of charge.
Such free reproduction is subject to the following conditions:
- Compliance with current copyright legislation (Law No. 633 of 22 April 1941, as subsequently amended);
- Reproduction must not involve any physical contact with the item, nor its exposure to light sources, nor—within cultural institutions—the use of stands or tripods;
- Completion of the appropriate form, available in the Printed Works and Manuscripts Reading Rooms, only in the case of musical scores and related material.
The dissemination, by any means, of images of cultural assets that have been lawfully acquired is likewise free of charge, provided that such images are not used for profit.
Digital reproductions with scanners (self-service)
In the Printed Works Reading Room, and upon completion of the appropriate form, reproductions of printed materials (maximum format A3) published after 1900 may be made using a dedicated scanner in self-service mode, with the use of a personal USB storage device, in compliance with current copyright legislation.
In all cases:
- Musical scores and sheet music may be reproduced only if each page bears a watermark reading “Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana” (Law No. 633 of 22 April 1941, as amended).
