Printed Book Catalogues

  • Manuscript catalogue of the Early Collections (bound volumes)
    Includes works that entered the Library up to 1870.
    Online cataloguing of these works is currently in progress; as of 2022
    , it has been completed for authors and titles of anonymous works from A to Ra.
  • General author catalogue (card catalogue)
    Contains publications from the fifteenth century to 2007.
    The records have been retroconverted and incorporated into the SBN VEA catalogue.
  • Alphabetical subject catalogue (card catalogue)
    Includes publications that entered the Library from 1958 onwards or were recatalogued after that date. Updated to 2007.
  • Alphabetical catalogue of Venetian subjects (card catalogue)
    Dedicated to publications relating to Venice. Updated to 2007.
  • Reading Room Catalogue (by author and subject)
    Includes works available in the reading rooms. Updated to 1993.
  • Catalogue of dramatic works (bound volumes)
    Arranged by author and title. The works are marked with the shelfmark ‘Dramm’.
  • Author catalogue of musical works (card catalogue)
    Updated to 2007.
  • Catalogue of the Tursi Collection (card catalogue)
    Dedicated to works by foreign travellers in Italy.
    Arranged by author and subject and available for consultation on request.

Manuscript Catalogues

The manuscripts of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana are organised into two main sections:

Early Collection (Fondo Antico)

  • Includes manuscripts acquired up to 1741.
  • Arranged by language and subject, in accordance with humanistic tradition.
  • Main catalogues: Greek, Latin, Italian, French, Oriental, and musical codices.

Appendix (Appendice)

  • Includes manuscripts acquired after 1741, most of which came from religious institutions and congregations suppressed in later periods.
  • Also arranged by language and subject.
  • Main catalogues: Greek, Latin, Italian, French, Oriental, and musical codices, with subsequent additions.

Greek manuscripts

Valentinelli, Trezzano sul Naviglio, Etimar, 1980–1985; 3 volumes with indexes; including an appendix describing 18 manuscripts acquired between 1953 and 1981, described by Susy Marcon.

Italian manuscripts (partial description)

Il fondo francese della Biblioteca Marciana di Venezia, edited by Sebastiano Bisson, Rome, Edizioni di storia e letteratura, 2008; the catalogue offers a new and updated overview of the foreign-language manuscript collection of the Marciana, examining and describing the codices of the Zanetti Collection shelfmarked ‘Fr. Z. 1–23’ and the Appendix manuscripts shelfmarked Str. App. 1, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 20, 23, 29, 39, 44, 45. It is accompanied by a cross-reference table and indexes.

‘Archivio Morelliano’ Collection

Catalogo di studi e carteggi del fu bibliotecario della Marciana ab. Jacopo Cav. Morelli, esistenti presso l’ill.mo e r.mo monsignor fr. Pietro dott. Pianton abate di S. M. della Misericordia, dei quali i proprietari vogliono fare la vendita, Venice, printed by P. Naratovich, 1847.

This catalogue describes the portion of the library – manuscripts and correspondence – belonging to Iacopo Morelli, which passed by inheritance to Pietro Bettio and was later sold, eventually reaching the Marciana Library through its purchase in 1877. The material consists of 131 bundles of papers and manuscripts, together with a series of ten notebooks in which Morelli recorded manuscripts examined in various libraries.

Gozzi Collection

Catalogo del fondo Gozzi presso la Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, edited by Susy Marcon, Elisabetta Lugato, and Stefano Trovato, in Carlo Gozzi 1720–1806: stravaganze sceniche, letterarie battaglie, edited by Fabio Soldini, Venice, Marsilio, 2006, pp. 113–200.

The catalogue brings together the autograph papers of the Gozzi family acquired by the Library at two different times: a larger lot, acquired in 2003 and designated as Gozzi Collection 1.1–24.3, which was added to a smaller portion of the same collection that had already reached this Venetian public collection in 1932 (manuscripts with shelfmarks: It. VII, 2504 = 12069; It. IX, 680–686 = 12070–12076). The catalogue is accompanied by indexes.
