Departments

The Departments are the organisational areas through which the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana coordinates the management, protection, enhancement, and development of its heritage. They are divided into specialised sectors that operate in public services, cataloguing and collection development, manuscript and special materials management, digitisation, education, communication, conservation, and technical and logistical activities. The departmental organisation ensures the effective functioning of services and the scientific and administrative stewardship of the Institute.

Catalogues

Catalogues are the main tool for navigating the Library’s collections and allow users to search for books, manuscripts, periodicals, and other materials held by the Library. It is important to note that not all collections are yet available online: retrospective data conversion is still in progress, and the online catalogue therefore does not offer complete coverage of the collections. For an accurate search, it is always necessary to verify the actual presence of the desired material and, if it is not available in the OPAC, also consult the printed catalogues in volumes and card catalogues available on site. Only the combined use of these tools allows a complete view of the Library’s collection.

Digital Library

The Digital Library of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana comprises a wide range of digital resources developed over time through national projects, institutional collaborations, and the Library’s own initiatives.
Currently, the digitised collection can be accessed through various entry points, depending on the specific methods used for the description, preservation, and publication of the materials. Digital reproductions may be consulted, depending on the case, through the Internet Culturale portal, through the catalogue of the Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale(OPAC SBN), through dedicated workstations available on site, or within digital editions and specific thematic projects (as in the case of the digital edition dedicated to Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle).

History

The idea of creating a public library in Venice first took shape during Francesco Petrarch’s stay in the lagoon city. In 1362, he decided to donate his books to the Republic so that they could form the nucleus of a larger collection open to scholars and lovers of learning.
